‘World’s most beautiful island’ is a hidden gem for fine dining and it’s cheapest in May

When you think of Saint Lucia, you probably picture white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and imposing mountain peaks covered in lush rainforest. This Caribbean gem recently named one of the 20 most beautiful islands in the world by Celebrity Cruises offers all that and more. Surprisingly, we also discovered some of the best food and drink we’ve ever tasted

Are you a spontaneous traveller? Then May is the perfect month to visit Saint Lucia. According to travel platform Go2Africa, hotel prices in May are on average 28.48% lower than in other months.

A memorable stay at Cap Maison Resort & Spa

Located in the north of the island, about a 90 minute drive from the airport, the five-star Cap Maison resort offers a mix of tranquillity, luxury and breathtaking views of historic Pigeon Island. The resort is built in hacienda style, with villas, private patios and lush gardens creating an intimate and relaxing atmosphere.

Even the standard rooms offer plenty of privacy and comfort, while our Ocean View Pool Suite offered a spacious and luxurious experience with its own kitchen, laundry facilities, outdoor shower and direct access to the main restaurant one of the highlights of our stay.

Culinary delights at a world class level

A member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group, Cap Maison is renowned for its excellent gastronomy. The resort boasts two top restaurants: The Cliff at Cap and The Naked Fisherman.

Led by Welsh chef Craig Jones, a long-time resident of the island, The Cliff offers a refined three-course menu daily. Recommendations include the mahi mahi ceviche, grilled dorado in butter and a delicious vegetarian risotto.

Breakfast is a feast each morning, with local dishes such as salted fish, Creole mushrooms on toast and succulent tropical fruits served with views of the sea and fishing boats on the horizon.

For a more relaxed setting, The Naked Fisherman is located on the secluded beach of Smugglers Cove. Here, you can enjoy juicy burgers, fresh salads and rum cocktails in beachwear with your feet in the sand.

A Sophisticated Drinking Experience

The Cap Maison’s wine cellar houses a carefully curated collection of bottles from around the world. The experience includes expert wine and cheese tastings, featuring unique flavors such as Pinot Noir from the Dolomites and a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley.

Sunset cocktail workshops are also offered, using a variety of rums, juices, and tropical fruits to teach the secrets of creating the perfect Caribbean drink.

What to do in St Lucia

While most days were spent blissfully lounging by Cap Maison’s pool or paddling kayaks and paddleboards from Smugglers Cove across the tranquil bay, first-time visitors should definitely consider a guided tour with a local to truly get to know the area.

Other must-do tourist activities in St Lucia include a trip to the mineral rich sulphur springs, hiking the iconic Pitons and creating your own chocolate bar at one of the island’s cocoa plantations. For a genuine St Lucian evening, don’t miss the Gros Islet street party on Friday nights, a hit with both tourists and locals.
