The pop star, who took a plea deal, was not in court Monday for the arraignment
Britney Spears has resolved her recent DUI-related case by accepting a plea agreement. Representing her in court, her attorney, Michael A. Goldstein, entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge known as “wet reckless” during proceedings at Ventura Superior Court on May 4. Spears herself was not present. The case stemmed from her arrest on March 4 in Ventura, California.
At 44, Spears received a sentence that includes 12 months of summary probation and a one-day jail term, which was already credited as time served. She was also ordered to pay a $571 fine and complete a three-month DUI education program consisting of 30 hours of classes. As part of the agreement, her vehicle may be searched for drugs or alcohol, and she must attend regular mental health treatment, including weekly sessions with a psychologist and twice-monthly visits with a psychiatrist.
In a statement following the hearing, Goldstein said that Spears has taken responsibility for her actions and has already begun making meaningful changes in her life. He noted that these efforts were reflected in the Ventura County District Attorney’s decision to reduce the original DUI charge. He added that Spears is thankful for both the legal discretion shown and the support she has received.
Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko confirmed that Spears accepted responsibility early in the process and agreed to continue treatment for mental health and substance use concerns. He emphasized that the goal is to prevent future offenses.
Initially, Spears had been charged with a misdemeanor. However, prosecutors indicated that a reduction to a wet reckless was likely due to several factors: she had no prior DUI record, there was no accident or injury involved, and her blood alcohol level was relatively low.
A wet reckless charge allows a defendant to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs, typically resulting in probation, fines, and mandatory participation in a DUI education program, along with credit for any time already spent in custody.
In the weeks leading up to her court appearance, Spears had voluntarily entered and later left a treatment facility. Following her arrest, a representative described the incident as unacceptable and stated that Spears intended to comply with legal requirements and seek necessary help.
Sources close to the situation indicated that her sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19 whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline played a significant role in encouraging her to seek treatment. According to one source, they have expressed a strong desire for their mother to focus on her health and well-being.
