Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have broken up, ending their nearly eight-year, on-off relationship, multiple sources reported.
“It feels final this time,” one source said of the split. Reps for the stars did not respond to requests for comment.
The Materialists actress, 35, and the Coldplay singer, 48, who were first romantically linked in 2017, were photographed together two weeks ago when they stepped out in Malibu together on May 16. Before that, in January, the pair held hands in India, where Martin was touring with his band.
In March 2024, an insider said that Johnson and Martin had actually been engaged for “years” after first sparking engagement rumors in 2020, though they were “in no rush to get married” at the time.

When breakup rumors bubbled up in August 2024, a rep for the actress shut down the claims and said the pair were “happily together.” Around the same time, a source said, “Sure, they’ve had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”

Prior to that, a source said in June 2024 that Johnson and Martin, who mostly kept their relationship private, had their “ups and downs, but now they’re definitely back on.”
Johnson previously opened up about being in the lives of Martin’s two kids with his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, son Moses and daughter Apple, now 19 and 21, respectively. “I love those kids like my life depends on it,” Johnson told Bustle. “With all my heart.”
She also told the outlet she was a big fan of watching Martin perform: “I don’t know. I love watching him. I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don’t know… I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing.”
The Fifty Shades of Grey actress next stars opposite Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in the romance Materialists, in theaters June 13. While promoting the film, Johnson discussed relationships with the Los Angeles Times in an interview published June 4,
“For a long time we’ve all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world. When people should get married. Divorce is bad. All these things that actually, if you think about it, why is divorce bad?” she said. “Why do people have to get married or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn’t matter.”
