David Fincher’s mysterious Squid Game project set in America may finally be moving forward. A new listing from the Film and Television Industry Alliance website reports that the new series, titled Squid Game: America, will begin filming next year on February 26. Fincher has yet to confirm this himself, but this is still the first concrete update for the show in months. It’s also unclear at this time who will star in the show, but it has been confirmed that Cate Blanchett’s mystery character from the end of Squid Game Season 3 will not be featured in Squid Game: America.
Squid Game first premiered back in 2021, and although it was originally planned as a one-season show, Netflix greenlit two more seasons of the series, which arrived last December and this July. While viewership remained sky-high for the second and third seasons of Squid Game, fans agreed that neither lived up to the quality of the first season. Fans also criticized Netflix for splitting Squid Game into two final seasons, when it was clearly designed as one and later split into two, each with fewer episodes. Still, Squid Game remains Netflix’s most popular show of all time, by a fairly wide margin.
News of David Fincher’s Squid Game project was first reported last year in October, before the release of Squid Game Season 2. Fincher has yet to publicly acknowledge his involvement in the American Squid Game remake, but original creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that the show is real and provided it with his full support. The American Squid Game remake will reportedly be completely disconnected from the original show with an all-new cast of characters.
Netflix has yet to announce when Squid Game: America will premiere, and considering that filming is still a few months away, this announcement likely won’t come for some time. If cameras do roll at the start of next year, this will leave the most likely release window sometime in 2028, possibly even around Christmas, when the first two seasons of Squid Game came out. Fincher is due to wrap up work soon on his Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood sequel with Brad Pitt, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, and Squid Game: America may yet be his next project.
