New movies to watch this weekend

Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson’s real-life romance may be under scrutiny, but we’ll always have “The Naked Gun.”

It’s a particularly fun week, with a pair of really good indies hitting theaters alongside the fourth entry in the popular The Conjuring horrorfranchise. At home, The Naked Gun and Nobody 2, two movies that I recommended when they hit theaters, are now available to rent or buy.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

Why you should watch it: The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025) is the ninth and purportedly final installment in the Conjuring Universe, directed by Michael Chaves and starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Released on September 5, 2025, the film delves into the Smurl haunting, a true story from 1986, marking a return to the franchise’s roots of supernatural horror.

The narrative unfolds in 1986, following the Smurl family’s harrowing experiences with a demonic presence in their Pennsylvania home. The Warrens, now retired, are drawn back into the fray when Lorraine’s daughter, Judy Warren (played by Mia Tomlinson), begins to exhibit her mother’s psychic abilities. Judy, along with her boyfriend Tony Spera (Ben Hardy), becomes entangled in the investigation, confronting malevolent forces that threaten their lives. The film intertwines past and present, with a prologue set in 1964 involving a haunted mirror that nearly claimed Judy’s life as an infant. This mirror resurfaces, linking the family’s past to the current terror.

How to watch: The Conjuring: Last Rites is now in theaters nationwide.

Twinless

Why you should watch it: What starts as a clever premise quickly evolves into something darker.

The short and spoiler-free synopsis is as follows: Two young men (Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney) meet in a twin bereavement support group and form an unlikely bromance. The idea of two twins, having both lost their other halves, searching for their own identity as they continue to live on, is so trenchant and emotional in itself. By the time the movie pulls a bait and switch and subverts that idea, it turns into a tragic thriller of sorts.

The Naked Gun

Why you should maybe watch it: Chaos reigns when detective Frank Drebin bumbles his way through crime, calamity, and some of the funniest moments in film history. Leslie Nielsen delivers deadpan perfection while the gags keep coming fast and furious. Hilarious, absurd, and endlessly quotable, The Naked Gun proves you don’t need subtlety to make something unforgettable. Stream it for nonstop laughs that never get old.

Nobody 2

Why you should watch it: Bob Odenkirk returns as Hutch Mansell, the suburban dad with a lethal past. When a family getaway turns into a fight for survival, Hutch faces corrupt theme-park operators, a crooked sheriff, and a ruthless crime boss. Fast-paced, gritty, and darkly humorous, this sequel delivers nonstop action with a surprising emotional punch. Now available to stream on digital platforms.

Friendship

Why you should watch it: Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd star in this darkly hilarious A24 comedy about a socially awkward dad who becomes obsessed with his charismatic new neighbor. What starts as a hopeful attempt at male bonding spirals into a cringe-filled nightmare of denial, anger, and absurdity. Directed by Andrew DeYoung, this film is a masterclass in awkward humor and emotional chaos

How to watch: Friendship is now streaming on HBO Max.

Highest 2 Lowest

Why you should watch it: Highest 2 Lowest (2025) is a modern reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, directed by Spike Lee. Set against the backdrop of New York City, the film stars Denzel Washington as David King, a music mogul whose life is upended when a kidnapping plot targets his family. The story delves into themes of wealth, power, and moral dilemmas, exploring the complexities of human hesitation and ethical responsibility.
