New movies to watch this weekend (Part 2)

Welcome to another edition of Women’s World today, a weekly guide to all the new movies.

It’s a particularly violent and bloody week for cinema. In theaters, a pair of smaller releases put up a fight against the box office juggernaut that is Project Hail Mary, including the Zazie Beetz horror-action-comedy They Will Kill You and a witchy Diablo Cody-produced gem in Forbidden Fruits.

They Will Kill You

They Will Kill You is a darkly comedic action-horror film about a woman, played by Zazie Beetz, who takes a housekeeping job in a mysterious New York City high-rise. She discovers the building is controlled by a wealthy, Satanic cult linked to past disappearances and is searching for her estranged sister. The film blends stylized violence, horror, and satire, drawing inspiration from Quentin Tarantino and Sam Raimi, while critiquing social inequality. Supporting roles include Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette.

How to watch: They Will Kill You is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is a feature-length extension of the Canadian mockumentary series created by Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol. The film follows exaggerated versions of themselves as they pull elaborate public stunts in Toronto to get their band a gig, blending scripted comedy with real-world pranks. Incorporating time travel and references to Back to the Future, it merges fiction with man-on-the-street footage, creating a unique mix of clever humor, DIY filmmaking, and surreal antics. The movie is accessible even to newcomers and has been praised for its deadpan humor and inventive execution.

How to watch: Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is now available to rent or buy on Apple TVPrime Video and other VOD platforms.

My bonus recommendation: Send Help

Send Help is a survival horror-comedy directed by Sam Raimi, his first horror film since Drag Me to Hell (2009). The story follows Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) and her insufferable boss (Dylan O’Brien) as the only survivors of a plane crash on a deserted island. Forced to cooperate despite past grievances, the film blends slapstick gore, dark humor, and performance-driven character dynamics. Raimi’s signature directorial flourishes, practical gags, and Danny Elfman’s score elevate the film, while both leads deliver standout performances in this comedic yet violent survival tale.

How to watch: Send Help is now available to rent or buy on Apple TV, Prime Video and other VOD platforms.

Pretty Lethal

Pretty Lethal is a stylized action film centered on five ballerinas who become embroiled in a deadly conflict at a roadside inn run by a former ballet prodigy and mobster, played by Uma Thurman. The women must use their ballet skills to survive against violent criminals, creating sequences of choreographed combat that combine elegance and brutality. The film is a straightforward, entertaining showcase of stylized violence, delivering on its premise without overcomplicating the story.

How to watch: Pretty Lethal is now streaming on Prime Video.

Primate

Primate is a lean, sub-90-minute creature feature directed by Johannes Roberts. The story follows Lucy, who reunites with her family and their pet chimp Ben, only for Ben to contract rabies and turn violently aggressive. Trapped with friends, Lucy must survive the relentless attacks using both ingenuity and barricades. Emphasizing practical effects, animatronics, and classic creature-feature tension, the film delivers suspenseful, gory set pieces with occasional dark humor, making it a modern homage to exploitation-style horror.

How to watch: Primate is now streaming on Paramount+.
